Finally, another issue of the EurOccupations quarterly newsletter. This second issue contains the following subjects:

The web survey, our search for experts, Italy joining our project, prof. dr. Kea Tijdens in the Spotlight, the international conference in 2008 and adding occupations to the web survey.

EurOccupations in a nutshell The EurOccupations research team is currently developing a European occupations database that includes general information on approximately 1500 occupations of all skill levels in the whole range of industries. Additionally, a selection of 160 key occupations is described in more detail (task descriptions, skill levels, occupational requirements etc.).
Web Survey online available

Our expert web survey is now available on our website! Visit www.EurOccupations.org, chooce your country and click OK to enter the survey. By means of this survey we aim to gather detailed occupation information on a selection of 160 key occupations. These key occupations are clustered in different kinds of areas of work. Click here to see the list of the EurOccupation key occupations.

We are looking for experts!

In order to gather detailed information on these 160 key occupations in the 8 participating countries, numerous national and international experts are consulted. Experts are, for instance, representatives of employer organisations, unions, educational institutes, knowledge centres, occupational organisations, job evaluators, researchers, vocational advisors, etc. If you have knowledge of the content of one or more occupations in your country (or internationally), we kindly invite you to participate in the EurOccupations expert network. Register on www.euroccupations.org.

What do we ask from you?

As an expert we ask you to complete a web survey on one or more occupations within your field of expertise.  This web survey includes questions on tasks, occupational requirements and competences. Completing a questionnaire will not take much of your time.

What will you get in return?

  • free access to the occupations database;
  • a report in your language that provides insight into international occupational structures and the content of occupations in varying national contexts within Europe (required education and certification, core tasks and competencies);
  • participation in a large, international network of experts.
Italy joins EurOccupations

Our EurOccupations project has expanded and now also includes Italy. This implies that we are gathering detailed occupation information on key occupations in 8 countries (instead of 7), namely:

      1. Italy
      2. United Kingdom
      3. Belgium
      4. Germany
      5. France
      6. Spain
      7. Poland
      8. The Netherlands

Cinzia Meraviglia and Dr. Paola Franchi from the department of social research Universitá degli Studi del Piemonte Orientalewill coordinate the expert research in Italy. Also from Italy, starting from 1 October, Andrea Mainardi will be working as an intern in the Netherlands.

International conference 2008 in Marseille

The international EurOccupations expert conference will take place on 21 and 22 May. The conference is open to a variety of national and international experts, who have knowledge on the content of one or more occupations in their country (or internationally). The goal of the EurOccupations expert conference is to gain further insight in similarities and differences in the relevant occupational and educational structures in Europe. Expert sessions are organised in which the following topics will be addressed:

  • occupational structures and requirements for several (groups of) occupations;
  • educational structures for several (groups of) occupations;
  • ‘problematic’ occupations (e.g. blurred occupations).

The conference will be open to all interested parties; participation is free of charge. If you are interested in attending our conference in Marseille, please contact Chiria da Luz Fortes (daluzfortes@fsw.eur.nl).

Adding occupations

For those interested, the EurOccupations team offers the opportunity to add new occupations to the web survey for a relatively low price (using the existing EuOccupations infrastructure). By adding occupations to our survey, organisations can obtain insight in task profiles and requirements for specific (groups of) occupations. For example, a Belgian government organisation wishes to gather information on 10 ‘problematic’ occupations using the EurOccupations web survey. If you are interested in this option, please contact Chiria da Luz Fortes. (daluzfortes@fsw.eur.nl)

In the Spotlight: Prof. Dr. Kea Tijdens

In every upcoming newsletter we will introduce one of the EurOccupations team-members. In this issue we want to draw the attention to our project coordinator Kea Tijdens.
